Workshops
On Monday afternoon 15.00-17.00 we plan a number of workshops, which you can choose among. Most of these are planned for one hour, so it is possible to visit two workshops.
1. Bionomia (2 hour workshop 15-17). Linking natural history specimens to the world’s collectors. Kenneth Lundin, Gothenburg Natural History Museum.
Make your natural history collections available and referenceable. Bionomia.net links specimens to the world´s collectors through integration with Wikidata, GBIF, ORCID and Zenodo.
Attendees who wish to learn how to work with Bionomia are asked to mail their name and orcid-ID in advance to davidpshorthouse@gmail.com. Please also bring your laptop to the session.
A workshop within the TETTRIs project: Transforming European Taxonomy through Training, Research and Innovation (EU project nr 101081903)
2. Use of photonics in monitoring of insect biodiversity. (1 hour workshop 15-16). Meng Li and Hampus Månefjord, Lund Laser Centre, Dept. of Physics, Lund University.
In this workshop we will demonstrate the use of photonic research focused on insects. With the aid of entomological Lidar, we gain insights into the activity pattern and biodiversity of airborne insects within their natural habitats. To enhance the accuracy of our Lidar-based insect identification, we are compiling a comprehensive database. This is achieved by scanning insects with our unique tool, BIOSPACE (Biophotonics, Imaging, Optical, Spectral, Polarimetric, Angular, and Compact Equipment). Contained within this database is optical information vital to the accurate identification of the insect species detected by our Lidar system. Join us at the workshop to learn about our methods, findings, and to establish potential collaborations.
3. Using 3D images for morphological studies (1 hour workshop 15-16 and 16-17, given twice). Sridar Halali, Department of Biology, Lund University.
The field of Biology, especially Evolutionary Biology, has immensely benefited from cutting-edge imaging techniques such as microCT. 3D images generated from microCT have provided novel insights into, for example, high-resolution morphology, anatomy, and biomechanics of both extinct and extant organisms. Moreover, microCT allows capturing and quantifying the entire phenome of an organism which can provide holistic insights into how a suite of traits evolve together. In this workshop, we aim to introduce common software used for visualizing microCT (or similar 3D), show the basic steps involved in segmenting and measuring traits of interest, and discuss challenges involved in acquiring microCT scans.
4. Museomics – sequencing genomes from museum specimens. (1 hour workshop 15-16 and 16-17, given twice). Niklas Wahlberg, Department of Biology, Lund University.
In this workshop I will describe protocols used for extracting and sequencing whole genomes from museum specimens. I will show what results can look like, and will discuss the possibilities as well as the short falls of museomics. My expertise is with insects, but I will discuss other groups of organisms as well.
Registration cost
After registration, you will receive an e-mail with payment instructions. The cost for participation in this year’s Systematikdagarna is:
- Full participation: 800 SEK per person, which includes conference fee, ”fika”, lunch and conference dinner in the evening of November 27. All food will be vegetarian.
- Limited participation: For those who do not wish to participate in the dinner, the conference cost is 400 SEK.
- Bachelor and Master students can register for 400 SEK (including dinner).
- You are also very welcome to pay the yearly membership fee to Svenska Systematikföreningen (100 SEK). Check the correct box in the registration form and add the appropriate amount to the conference fee when paying. You can also pay the membership fee separately.
